Libby Morley is a counsellor here in Cambridge, and she’s been training with us since 2023. When we asked her to sit down in front of a camera, she said something we hear from a lot of people before they ever walk through our door:
“I never thought I would come and join a gym. I’ve always been too self-conscious about it.”
The video is just over a minute long, and it’s worth watching all of it. Below are the parts that stuck with us, and why they matter if you’re where Libby was.
This is how she describes it now:
“I have now found that I can move a lot better. My joints are supported. My body’s supported.”
There’s nothing mysterious about it. Stronger muscles around your hips, knees and shoulders take some of the load off the joints, so everyday movement gets easier. It doesn’t take heroic workouts. It takes regular training, with a plan that suits your body, done with good technique week after week.
“The biggest changes for me have been the way that my body moves, how I feel about my body as well. I feel a lot more positive about it. It’s not all about weight. It isn’t all about what I look like, but it’s much more focused on how I feel.”
A lot of people come to a gym with one number in mind. The scales only measure one thing, though. They can’t tell you that the shopping bags feel lighter, that you got up off the floor without thinking about it, or that you’ve stopped fighting your own body.
That’s why we don’t do dramatic before-and-after photos. The changes Libby talks about are the ones that last, and the ones you notice every day.
“Coaches have been really brilliant. They’re always on hand. They can advise me on what to do.”
That’s how we’ve set things up. We coach in groups of eight, so there’s no hiding at the back and no getting lost. Every session is planned for you, and a coach watches every set, corrects your form and adjusts things when a joint is grumbling. You never have to stand in the middle of a gym floor wondering what you’re meant to be doing.
“Now I’m just absolutely delighted that BCA is here.”
If the thought of a gym makes you want to stay at home, you’re in good company. Plenty of our members felt exactly the same: put off by mirrors, by people filming themselves, or by being sure they’d be the least fit person in the room.
We’re a small gym at Cambridge North station, built for people 35 and over who want to get stronger and feel better without performing for anyone. No egos, no shouting and no judgement. Just proper coaching and a group of people who’ll notice when you’re not there.
If it sounds like you, reach out via the link below and we’ll give you an honest answer about whether we’re the right fit. And if you’re not ready yet, that’s fine. We’ll still be here.
